Lvis Mejía is a contemporary artist and musician that sees himself more as an agent exploring phenomena while converting it into an aesthetic practice. His oeuvre takes on multiple forms and expressions: intermedia art covering the scope of audiovisual performance, electro-acoustic and symphonic music, conceptual art, installation as well as film. 1. What is the biggest inspiration for your music?
Metaphysical speculation, and therefore instances surpassing our comprehension through sensitivity.
2. How and when did you get into making music?
Some years ago a good friend had a demo version of a music software, i tried it out and lost myself like a kid in a candy store. A couple of weeks later I acquire a laptop and the rest is history.
3. What are 5 of your favorite albums of all time?
If I may take the liberty to propose responding to 5 different sound related experiences that shocked me, order in a non-hierarchical way, than….:
1.- The soundcheck previous a performance (organ and electronics) in the Trinitatis Kirche in Hamburg
2.- Contemplating a thunderstorm during the night on the beach
3.- The sudden uncontrolled increase of amplitude coming from a powerful sound system paired to the automatic collapse of the speakers resulting in a: „Bliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiihhhhhh“ in my ears
4.- Aquatic sound resonance
5.- A biker hitting the ground after being run over by a car (fortunately I did not see it, but the sound was more than enough)
4. What do you associate with Berlin?
CCC (constant contemporary change) (a bit of sarcasm never killed anybody)
5. What’s your favorite place in your town?
My work desk.
6. If there was no music in the world, what would you do instead?
I would engage socially, study physics, try to get rich in order to open a research facility for alternative sciences, or best case scenario – try to be as remorselessly unreflected, stupido and ignorant without noticing it and live happy under those standards.
7. What was the last record/music you bought?
I wanted to buy Hydrophony’s „Home work“ but he did not wanted to seek it to me, just giving me one copy (cassette) which I haven’t received yet!
8. Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Being completely honest, I have never thought about it, tough one.
9. What was your best gig (as performer or spectator)?
One of those questions again, hmmm…
I remember seeing Radiohead at Coachella’s 2004, touring „Hail to the thief“ as something memorable.
10. How important is technology to your creative process?
The only technology that I consider crucial is the opportunity to record, this implying the capacity of reproducing the same content.
For me this represents one the most important advances in any sense.
Without that possibility I think I would love to dedicate some time to explore the voice.
