Tom Marsh of Those Goddamn Hippies
Those Goddamn Hippies first appeared in 2015 with a self titled EP. The Band is a project around the British singer and multi-instrumentalist Tom Marsh, who teamed up with the Austrian guitarist/musician Mike Seidl. Fronted by Englishman Tom, who pours his heart and soul into the vocals and lyrics, the Hippies are easily able to strike a chord with the listener. Those Goddamn Hippies´ music is an elegant mix of electric and acoustic elements. A combination of singer-songwriter attitude and easily digestible beats. Their latest single “Glowing” was produced by Jonathon Mooney from the American band ‘Other Lives’. Glowing is a lush and emotional musical offering with soaring melodies with some searing guitars bringing things to an epic climax. The song is about longing for togetherness.
1: The first written instance of “OMG” that we know of was in a letter to Winston Churchill in 1917.
2: Gorillas can’t swim.
3: The first computer programmer was a woman. Ada Lovelace.
1. What is the biggest inspiration for your music?
Self expression. I started off with drums and really found a way to express myself through them. The more I learnt the betterwas able to show myself through the music. Music is something that you can lose yourself and find yourself in. For me, that journey is the inspiration.
2. How and when did you get into making music?
I was shit at football and too dumb for chess club. There wasn’t much left to be honest. It was a no brainer. I grew in a house full of music so I started singing and playing piano as a young child. Music was my first love.
3. What are 5 of your favourite albums of all time?
Jeff Buckley – Grace
Trentemøller – The Last Resort
Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin III
Apparat – The Devils walk
Dawn Golden – Still Life
4. What do you associate with Berlin?
Well, I lived there for almost 8 years so it feels a bit like home. Friends, long nights and a musical playground. I feel like people come to Berlin to live out their fantasies and explore their alter-egos. It is a wild place and for me it was where I musically came of age.
5. What’s your favourite place in your town?
Definitely the wine hills. Beautiful views and peace and quiet. Vienna is No.1 again in the worlds best cities to live, so it is hard to pick just one place.
6. If there was no music in the world, what would you do instead?
I would invent music, of course!
7. What was the last record/music you bought?
Punch Brothers – 2018. These guys are so amazing!
8. Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Trentemøller! He is a massive inspiration. Also judging by what I have read and by listening to his music, he is an absolute sound freak, in the best possible way! I could imagine getting lost in a basement studio for a few days with him!
9. What was your best gig (as performer or spectator)?
I am not sure this was the best, but it is the one that I remember the most! Marilyn Manson, 1999, Milton Keynes Big Day Out. I was 15 and the whole band just blew me away. Also, I had never seen a grown man stick his finger into his own ass before… So that was new.
10. How important is technology to your creative process?
Actually quite important. Ideas can spring from anywhere but often a weird sound created in Ableton will set off a sort of creative reaction thatresults in a new song.
11. Do you have siblings and how do they feel about your career/art?
I have two sisters and they are both really creative, so they completely understand my obsession. One is an art director and the other is a psychologist now, so I am hoping they will take care of me when I am an old broke musician!
Those Goddamn Hippies upcoming full-length album “Purpose” will be released on the 26th April 2019. Catch the band playing at Privatclub Berlin on Monday, 13th May 2019!
